  • Growing Advice - Strawflower

Easy to grow - don't require extra water or rich soil but do need excellent drainage. Full sun and best sown direct where they are to grow in Spring and Autumn - light required for germination so cover lightly with vermiculite if sowing in tray (and pot up when seedlings are still very small) or press lightly into soil surface on the ground - keep damp until germination (approx 7-21 days) - thin to 20cm apart - pinch out growing tip at 20cm high to encourage branching - stronger plant and more flowers - deadhead regularly to keep flowering, if harvesting for cut wait for flower calyx to unfurl but if drying be sure to pick prior to full opening as they continue to open after picking and will go to seed if left too late. Cut low to keep regrowth from being too brittle.

Not attractive as they age and although they are capable of being perennial, I believe it is better to sow fresh seed each season.
